Audio noise – and noise reduction – is a polarizing topic. Some people swear by multi-kilobuck power switches, cables and devices to eliminate the faintest speck of noise on an audio graph, nevermind any ‘noise’ they find is completely inaudible to humans. Others wouldn’t know how noisy their systems are because they’ve never even thought to test them, being too busy enjoying the music to care.
Most of us enthusiasts sit somewhere in the middle. We know the noise is there, can pick up the differences in our music when fed a clean signal through resolving headphones or speakers, and are smart enough not to go mad (or broke) trying to rid our systems of this resident evil.
For not a lot of money, iFi makes some very clever devices that help you sweep away most of the noise from your system without too much fuss. They make more expensive and complicated devices too, but for our purposes here, most of us will be perfectly served with something more modest.
The iPurifier 3, iSilencer 3 and DC iPurifier 2 fall squarely into the more modest category. They can and do make a difference, but like anything in audio, that difference could sometimes be so small you’d never notice it without focusing all your powers of concentration.
The best advice I can give you, when it comes to your own system, is to try them for yourself. iFi has a very generous return policy in most countries, so if any of the many devices they make don’t fit your purpose, just return them and no harm done. Chances are they will make a difference, and you’ll thank me (and iFi) for money well spent.
